Seeking Intimacy in Recovery
Building intimacy sober can feel foreign and hopeless at times. Communication with your partner can be difficult. Both parties want to be heard but no one listening. Often we build up anger, resentment and fear around our intimate relationships. This makes it difficult to express our thoughts, feelings, experiences and sexual desires.
Exploring sex and intimacy in sobriety can be intimidating. We may be filled with shame, guilt and trauma from our past. We come into our new relationship broken bringing our baggage with us.
Healthy, safe, sexual communication with your partner will take courage, patience and understanding. You will have to surrender your old ideas, be willing to try something new, or even re-visit things that have been tried before with fresh eyes.
